Next-Generation Acura NSX Named a ‘Best of What’s New’ Winner By Popular Science Magazine

Nov 18, 2015 – TORRANCE, Calif.

The next-generation Acura NSX supercar, launching in the spring, has received a 2015 “Best of What’s New” award from Popular Science magazine for its advanced, new approach to electrified supercar technology.

“The Acura NSX challenges conventional notions of supercar performance, and it’s great to see our advanced Acura performance technologies receive this kind of recognition,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of Acura. “With its three-motor Sport Hybrid powertrain, the NSX is propelling Acura performance in an amazing new direction and we can’t wait to share the results with our customers.”

Foremost among its many innovations is the NSX’s Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive powertrain, the first of its kind in the supercar realm. Its three electric motors enhance all aspects of dynamic performance — acceleration, cornering and braking – in numerous ways, including “direct yaw control,” the continuous, dynamic distribution of electric motor torque.

Marrying this advanced and electrified new expression of Acura performance with timeless elements of NSX design, including innovative body construction and superior cabin ergonomics, the next-generation NSX delivers a New Sports eXperience that faithfully translates the inputs of the driver with incredible fidelity and zero delay.

How to Prepare Your Car for the Winter Season

While it doesn’t seem like it just yet — winter is right around the corner. The winter season, even more than other times of the year, is prone to significantly affect driving conditions — leaving you more susceptible to accidents.

One of the most important things to keep in mind to stay safe is to make sure your car is properly prepared to handle whatever situation or driving conditions you could possibly face in the next few months.

Here are a few of our tips to keep you prepared and safe this winter:

Have the right oil and filters for your car

Refer to your Owner’s Manual for the right oil for your specific vehicle. You can also ask your Acura Service Advisor what type of oil not only works for your car but for the upcoming winter season.  Usually, lighter weight oils work better than thicker oils as they help improve engine startup and provide better lubrication — which is essential for engine protection.

While your Service Technicians check and top your oil levels, advise to have them replace the air and transmission filters at the same time.

Check your vehicle’s battery condition

Here’s a scenario you don’t want to be involved in: you’re stuck in the middle of nowhere, it’s freezing cold and your car won’t start. Doesn’t seem much fun, does it?

Check your vehicle’s battery connections and make sure they’re free of corrosion. Have your Acura Service Technician test the battery and advise to have it replaced if necessary.

Replace your windshield wipers and wiper fluids

You should always replace windshield wipers every six months. If your windshield wipers don’t perform properly, it could affect your ability to see in different weather conditions.

Not all wiper fluids work the same. Just like tires, all-season wiper fluids won’t perform as well as winter wiper fluids. Right before the beginning of the winter season, switch your fluid to winter wiper fluid. They’re specifically designed to handle the weather conditions and won’t freeze on your windshield.

Once the temperature drops below 7 degrees — that’s when you know it’s time to switch over. Winter tires perform significantly better and provide better traction than that of regular tires. Regardless if your vehicle is a front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, it’s highly recommended and mandatory to have all four tires replaced for increased performance and safety.

Schedule a Tire Switchover when you go for your next maintenance check and ask your Acura Service Advisor about Tire Storage if you live in an area with little to no storage room!

Stock up your Emergency Kit

An important tip to take note of for winter preparedness is having an Emergency Kit handy at all times. Here’s a few things to include in your Emergency Kit and the best part — they can all fit in the trunk of your car! To keep them organized, store them in a container that will fit comfortably in your vehicle.

  • Warm blanket
  • Boots, gloves and a hat
  • Bottles of water and snacks. Chocolate bars or items with high sugar content are great examples.
  • Flashlight
  • A small shovel
  • Jumper cables
  • A flare
  • A first aid kit
  • A bag of sand or salt for extra traction in case you get stuck

Other helpful tips:

  • Keep your gas tank as full as possible. It will decrease the chances of your gas lines from freezing due to condensation in the cold weather.
  • Keep all of your fluids topped off with winter-specific liquids. This includes: antifreeze, wiper fluids and oil.
  • Have your car properly inspected for any wear and tear.
  • Check your heaters and defrosters. Make sure that not only do they work properly but they also heat up your car at an appropriate speed.
  • Have your brakes checked. Winter driving causes more friction on your brakes — have them properly inspected and replaced if necessary.

Acura Becomes First Luxury Brand to Earn 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ Rating Across its Entire Model Line

  • 2016 ILX and RDX are the latest Acura vehicles to earn a TOP SAFETY PICK+ from the IIHS
  • Acura is the first luxury brand to earn the top designation across its entire model line
  • AcuraWatch™ suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies available across the entire Acura lineup

Acura has become the first luxury brand to earn a 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating for its entire model line from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS announced today that the significantly refreshed 2016 ILX and 2016 RDX have each received a 2015 TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating, when equipped with AcuraWatch™, resulting in the entire Acura lineup of luxury sedans and SUVs earning the safety distinction.

“As the first luxury brand to earn the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating across its entire model line, Acura continues to champion safety performance as a key luxury attribute,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager for the Acura Division. “Acura has made the commitment to offer advanced safety performance technologies across our entire lineup, helping all Acura luxury sedans and SUVs earn the top safety rating from IIHS.”

The TOP SAFETY PICK+ ratings for the 2016 Acura ILX and RDX include a top rating of GOOD in all IIHS crash test modes, including a top score of GOOD in the Insurance Institute’s new small overlap front crash test and a top score of SUPERIOR in its front crash protection test.

“We commend Acura for receiving the highest IIHS award designation for all of its vehicles,” said David Zuby, executive vice president and senior research officer for IIHS. “With qualifying crashworthiness ratings, including in the rigorous front small overlap crash test, and an effective front crash prevention system available across the lineup, Acura is one of the leaders in the luxury segment.”

With both models receiving significant enhancements for 2016, the Acura ILX and RDX boast more advanced safety technology than ever before. The AcuraWatch™ suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies is now available on all Acura models and is standard on the 2016 RDX Advance package and 2016 ILX Tech Plus package. AcuraWatch™ can help improve the driver’s situational awareness and, in certain circumstances, intervene to help avoid a collision or mitigate its severity.

AcuraWatch™ includes features like Collision Mitigation Braking System™ with Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Lane Keeping Assist System, Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Departure Warning (LDW). These systems benefit from the adoption of a sensor fusion technology integrating the capabilities of a windshield-mounted monocular camera and front grille-mounted millimeter wave radar system to provide enhanced sensing with the ability to identify and anticipate multiple collision scenarios, including those involving a pedestrian. When the system anticipates a collision or road departure, it can initiate warnings and, in certain instances, initiate emergency braking and steering.

To further improve frontal collision performance, the 2016 Acura ILX and RDX offer enhanced crash safety design with numerous changes to its next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. The next-generation ACE™ design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to help distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle, enhancing occupant protection and crash compatibility in front collisions.

Acuras, past and future, star at 2015 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

  • Parker Johnstone takes Spice Acura from museum to pole, podium finishes
  • Next-Generation Acura NSX supercar on display
  • Winning 2009 Acura ARX-02a LMP1 also featured

Capping a week-long celebration of Acura’s motorsports heritage, highlighted by multiple appearances of the new NSX supercar, former IMSA champion Parker Johnstone started from the pole and scored a pair of second place finishes Saturday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in a return to the cockpit of his multiple title-winning Spice Acura.

More than 550 entrants took part in the 2015 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Part competition and part pageantry, the Reunion brings racing history to life as cars from nearly every era at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The cars, selected for their historical significance, authenticity and correctness for the period, are divided into 15 classes, based on the type of car, displacement and era of origin.

“This is Acura’s first time participating in the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, so it is only fitting that we celebrate the launch of the next-generation NSX with another iconic machine, the record-setting champion Spice Acura GTP Lights car,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura division. “Today’s results reflect Acura’s performance heritage and performance future of the brand.”

Starting in 1991, Johnstone partnered with Acura, several co-drivers and the Comptech team to win three consecutive IMSA GTP Lights championships from 1991-1993.  Powered by a race-modified 3.0-liter VTEC V6 engine, the heart of the first-generation NSX, Johnstone, Acura and Comptech swept the GTP Lights manufacturers’ and drivers’ championships all three years, setting all-time qualifying and race win records, including victories here at Laguna Seca, the 12 Hours of Sebring and two triumphs at the 24 Hours of Daytona.

After being retired from competition following the 1993 season, the Spice Acura has most recently been on display at the American Honda Automotive Museum in Torrance, California, and was prepared for its return to the track by former Comptech team principal Doug Peterson. Taking part in the 35-car IMSA GTO/GTP race group, many of them larger-displacement GTO and GTP cars, Johnstone led both practice sessions to earn the pole for today’s races.

Despite its long layoff from competition, the Spice Acura ran flawlessly throughout the weekend, giving best only to a single, larger-displacement Porsche 962 in each of today’s races.

“Professionally, the success we had with this racing program is incalculable–in how it affected both my life and the life of the team. It’s the car that vaulted us into IndyCar,” said Johnstone. “And to race it again here at Laguna Seca, where some of my earliest memories as a child occurred and where I drove my first competitive race car, is indescribable.”

Between appearances on track, the Spice Acura was on display in the Acura Garage in the Laguna Seca paddock, flanked by the Acura ARX-02a LMP1 car driven to five victories – including Laguna Seca – in the 2009 American Le Mans Series title by drivers Gil de Ferran and Simon Pagneaud; and the new Acura NSX.

With a pair of entries fielded by Highcroft Racing and de Ferran Motorsports, the Acura ARX-02a dominated the 2009 ALMS season, winning eight of ten races to finish 1-2 in the championship. In addition, the Fernandez Racing organization won eight races in the LMP2 class to win the class championship in an Acura ARX-01b.

The NSX at Laguna Seca was one of a trio of the next-generation supercars, which were featured earlier in the week at The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. Powered by a 75-degree twin-turbo V6 mated to a nine-speed dual clutch transmission and three electric motor Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system. It will be produced at the new Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio.
